control barricades are right in front of us, stacked up and ready to go at the embarcadero ahead of the big fireworks display in san francisco. pyrotechnics stuffed packets of gun powder into these plastic shelves. the preparations here were spread out across two barges docked at pier 250. >> there's hundreds of shells. >> reporter: 12 hours from now, they will unleash a shell of colors for the new year's eve fireworks celebration. >> the 15-minute show is carefully planned and electronically timed. >> the shells are timed every time they are supposed to go off. >> reporter: this is video from last year. this year is expected to be just as big with more than 4500 different shots of dazzling lights in effect. 250,000 people came to the embarcadero to watch the fireworks last year but with clear skies and dry weather expected tonight, the crowd could be even bigger. new year's eve partiers say there's only one way to get to the city tonight. >> public transit in general is a great idea. park something a nightmare -- park something a nightmare. >> i would -- parking is a nightmare.
and that is right now pg&e is proposing a embarcadero portearo transition line for redundancy. as you know we are fed by three groups off the peninsula and loss of a substation in san francisco could create much instability and affect reliability of the system. embarcadero currently supplying power from the mid-market substations and through those soils. repair could take eight hours to several weeks. maintaining the embarcadero station is critical to the san francisco downtown and waterfront region. the system of reliability was raised during the study interview with pg&e in november 2011 and pg&e followed up with the council getting support to ada third connection to the embarcadero station with this going to the portero substation and improve system reliability particularly into the downtown area in a major earthquake and allow pg&e more flexibility with work and unexpected equipment outages. they gave three routes and options to provide feedback and you can see from the box, the green, red and blue routes so pg&e is continuing to work with the city and the project design and the appro

in the foot when somebody started shooting somebody started shooting along the embarcadero right near peer 23. this happened as large crowds were gathering waiting for the fireworks show to begin. this same shooting injured another man who was grazed in the hip by a bullet. san francisco police say both shooting victims are being treated for non-life threatening injuries and right now police are still searching for the shooter in that case and it is unclear why that person started shooting. just about an hour before one person was shot in fisherman's wharf. that person's injuries are not considered life-threatening and officers searched the area for the shooting and last saw the shooter running through a plaza near fisherman's wharf. police have not announced any arrests but officers did end up making a number of other arrests and a total of 10 people were taken in. most of them, 8 of them were booked for being drunk in public, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 morning news. >>> thank you alex. coming up on 5:02 despite that arrest, thousands rang in the new year on the embarcadero safely and they

to be a aa member. >>> thousands expected to ring in the new year at a fire works show near the embarcadero. allie rasmus is live to explain how bart and muni are preparing for the big crowd and changes to some routes. >> reporter: and other agencies as well. first of all tens of thousands of people come to the embarcadero for the fire works show. and there are other parties going on in the city. is a lot of people will not want to take their cars. bay area transit agencies are making it easier for them to leave their cars behind by offering free rides in some cases and extended service. starting with bart. bart you will still have to pay for your tickets but their trains will be running late tonight until 3:00 a.m. tuesday morning. but in order to avoid congestion, trains will not be stopping at all the stations. keep this in mind if you are riding the pepper bay point train it will stop at the embarcadero station. make sure you go to the right place to catch your ride home. muni is also extending service at the west portal and embarcadero stations. muni will run until 4:00 a.m. new years

crowd. the everything. it's the city. >> reporter: restaurants along the embarcadero, like sin bads say the only holiday that can approach new year's eve business is mother's day. >> we are booked out for the night entirely every year. >> reporter: crews put up barricades to keep new years revelers off the street. >> be advised if you are out there and you happen to be very inebriated, you will be stopped. >> i'm going straight home and going to bed. >> reporter: if you take a look at our live shot, you might be able to see a couple of san francisco police officers. we can tell you, they are spread out throughout the city, and there are officers throughout the bay area, out patrolling for drunks tonight. i was told by one officer, even if someone manages to make sure way through one of those check points, the officers tell me they have ways of tracking down these people if they try to avoid going through the check points, so they're definitely on alert for drunk drivers. we will be back with an update at how things are developing here, getting ready for tonight's big fireworks display.
. the everything. it's the city. >> reporter: restaurants along the embarcadero, like sin bads say the only holiday that can approach new year's eve business is mother's day. >> we are booked out for the night entirely every year. >> reporter: crews put up barricades to keep years revelers off the street. >> be advised if you are out there and you happen to be very inebriated, you will be stopped. >> i'm going straight home and going to bed. >> reporter: if you take a look at our live shot, you might be able to see a couple of san francisco police officers. we can tell you, they are spread out throughout the city, and there are officers throughout the bay area, out patrolling for drunks tonight. i was told by one officer, even if someone manages to make sure way through one of those check points, the officers tell me they have ways of tracking down these people if they try to avoid going through the check points, so they're definitely on alert for drunk drivers. we will be back with an update at how things are developing here, getting ready for tonight's big fireworks display. ktvu, channel 2 news.
